Audition Information

DEADLINES

Application Deadline for all Young Artist Spring Programs:

October 30, 2016, 11:59pm

Applications submitted after this date will be accepted, but an audition time may not be available. Late applicants are encouraged to submit an electronic audition (YouTube or DVD).

Work Study Program Application Deadline:

February 15, 2017, 11:59pm

Applications submitted after this date will be accepted, however an in-person interview may not be available. A Skype or phone interview may be made.

APPLICATION FEES

An application fee is payable by major credit card or e-transfer prior to auditioning. Only one application fee ($65 is required if the applicant is applying for multiple programs.

10-Day Intensive Program:           $60
Opera Apprentice Program:          $60
Six-Week Program – Singers:       $65
Six-Week Program – Pianists:       $65
DVD Auditions:                               $30

This fee is non-refundable and an audition time will not be secured until payment is received.

Applicants who are unable to attend a live audition may submit a DVD by October 30, 2016.
An $30 application fee must be paid.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

FOR SINGERS

A complete application package for Singers will include:

  • A fully completed application form through YAP TRACKER
  • A web resolution headshot with a maximum file size of 2 MB
  • A current 1-page résumé or CV. (Please be sure to list any and all union affiliations.)
  • A 100-word bio for promotional purposes
  • A 250-word statement on why you have chosen NUOVA’s programs and what you are wanting to accomplish with further intensive training.

TWO references are required for a first-time applicant. Only one reference is required for returning 2016 participants.  One reference should come from the applicant’s main instructor. A second may be provided by a voice coach, conductor, opera stage director, general director or other artistic professional.

Please note: Singers must provide their own accompanist.

TEN-DAY PROGRAM AUDITIONS

  1. One aria or music theatre solo
  2. One art song (any language or style is acceptable)

FIVE-WEEK OPERA APPRENTICE PROGRAM AUDITIONS

  1. One Gilbert & Sullivan song or Musical Theatre Selection
  2. One art song (any language or style is acceptable)
  3. One aria of your choice

SIX-WEEK INTENSIVE OPERATIC AUDITIONS

  1. One art song of your choice (Please have a Slavic choice prepared if possible)
  2. One Italian aria
  3. One non-Italian aria (Please provide contrasting styles and tempi. No Oratorio.)
  4. One English aria, or a music theatre selection
    • A second art song may replace one of your arias
  5. One poem, sonnet or monologue (classic or contemporary) no longer than 2 minutes
    • You may also choose to perform the spoken text of an aria

SIX-WEEK INTENSIVE MUSIC THEATRE AUDITIONS

One song from each of the following eras:

  1. Tin Pan Alley era (1920 – 1949) (Composers such as Berlin, Kern, Gershwin, Porter, Rodgers and Hart, Weill, etc.)
  2. The Golden Age (1943-1965) (Composers such as Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, Bock and Harnick, early Sondheim, etc.)
  3. Contemporary Musical Theatre repertoire (1966 – present day) (Composers such as late Sondheim, Kander and Ebb, Schwartz, Finn, etc.)
  4. A Gilbert & Sullivan selection or a “Character” song of your choice (preferably demonstrating character type or patter ability.)
  5. A 2-minute monologue (Classical or contemporary)

All applicants will receive written feedback from their audition within one month of the audition date.


FOR PIANISTS

A complete application package for Pianists will include:

  • A fully completed application form through YAP TRACKER
  • A web resolution headshot with a maximum file size of 2 MB
  • A current one page résumé or CV (Please be sure to list any and all union affiliations.)
  • A 100-word bio for promotional purposes
  • A 250-word statement on why you have chosen NUOVA’s programs

ONE reference is required for a first-time applicant. No new reference is required for returning participants.  The reference should come from the applicant’s main instructor.  Applicants who are unable to attend a live audition may submit a DVD.

  1. The following is to be prepared in a collaborative performance WITH A SINGER*:
    • 2 contrasting arias
    • 1 art song
  2. A short sight reading excerpt provided at the audition

Please note: Pianists must provide their own singers.
