In one of the twentieth century's most powerful and emotionally challenging operas, Poulenc examines faith and courage as we follow an order of Carmelite nuns caught in the turmoil and terror of the French Revolution. Blanche de la Force, deeply afraid of the changing world around her, leaves her father, brother and life of nobility to join the safety of the Carmelites where she hopes to live and work without fear of persecution.

This affectionately humorous portrait of life in a Jewish village in Tsarist Russia centres on Tevye, a milkman-philosopher and father of five, as he tries to uphold tradition in an ever changing political and social landscape. This musical, full of recognizable tunes like If I Were a Rich Man and Sunrise, Sunset, illuminates universal themes of family struggle and human perseverance with humour, warmth and honesty.

Nemorino, a peasant, is in love with the wealthy landowner Adina, but she has eyes only for dashing Sergeant Belcore. The quack, Dr Dulcamara, sells Nemorino a "love potion" that will cause Adina to fall in love with him within a day. Only Donizetti can cure ailments of the heart with a call to war, a windfall inheritance, a dose of liquid confidence and sweeping romantic lyricism.
