Biography     

Pianist Michael McMahon studied at McGill University with Charles Reiner. He completed his studies in Vienna at the Franz Schubert Institute and the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst, and in Salzburg at the International Summer Academy held at the Mozarteum. There, he studied with Erik Werba, Hans Hotter, Elly Ameling, Jörg Demus and Kim Borg. Michael has performed around the world with singers such as Catherine Robbin, Karina Gauvin, Lyne Fortin, Dominique Labelle, Wendy Nielsen, Annamaria Popescu, Maureen Forester, Marie-Nicole Lemieux, Measha Brueggergosman, Marianne Fiset, Richard Margison, Russell Braun, Philippe Sly, Michael Schade, Benjamin Butterfield, Joseph Kaiser, Daniel Taylor, Nathan Berg and Kevin McMillan, earning him the reputation of being a “luxury partner”.

In addition to his duties as Professor at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University, Michael has had a long association with Opera NUOVA, l'Atelier lyrique de l'Opéra de Montréal and the Orford Arts Centre, as a vocal coach. He has also recently joined the staff of the Toronto Summer Music Academy, the Franz Schubert Institute in Baden bei Wien, Austria and the Centre for Opera in Sulmona, Italy. He is a frequent adjudicator and leads Master Classes for singers and pianists. He has made numerous broadcast recordings for both the English and French CBC, as well as for the BBC, RBTF, Radio Suisse Romande and Radio France. With five Juno nominations to his credit, his recordings for the Marquis, Atma, CBC Records and Analekta labels have met with critical acclaim.
