The Lives of Lesser Things
by Isaiah Bell
( Premiere )
This high-energy children's opera - commissioned by Opera NUOVA for the dual purpose of introducing children to the art form of opera and creating environmental awareness - centres around a widely varied group of insects who all share the same home. The opera finds the crotchety old Dung Beetle, the cunning Praying Mantis, the unstoppable Gnats and the wide-eyed, hungry Caterpillar all living on the stalk of the same flower, at turns fighting, befriending and ignoring each other as they struggle to eat and stay alive. Between the young and the old, the predator and the prey, the grotesque and the beautiful, each creature wants to have a family and to live on in the way he always has, even as the world around them changes. This new work, full of hummable tunes, hijinks and lessons about friendships and responsibility, is sure to keep students enthralled and to leave a lasting impression.
We bring the performance to your school and all you need to provide is a tuned piano and the excited audience. K to 6 students will be able to experience the magic of opera and they can even participate as the orchestra using Orff instruments.
