Lauderdale School – Principal: Maureen MacDonald

“ The cast was highly professional and the props and scenery were visually appealing. The storyline was very appropriate for children of all ages and our students were absolutely enthralled during the performance. I would highly recommend schools to take advantage of a wonderful opportunity to see a live performance that introduces youngsters to opera. This is the second time that opera NUOVA has performed at Lauderdale and both presentations were outstanding.”

January 25th - February 12 th , 2010
The Lives of Lesser Things
by Isaiah Bell
( Premiere )

This high-energy children's opera - commissioned by Opera NUOVA for the dual purpose of introducing children to the art form of opera and creating environmental awareness - centres around a widely varied group of insects who all share the same home.   The opera finds the crotchety old Dung Beetle, the cunning Praying Mantis, the unstoppable Gnats and the wide-eyed, hungry Caterpillar all living on the stalk of the same flower, at turns fighting, befriending and ignoring each other as they struggle to eat and stay alive.   Between the young and the old, the predator and the prey, the grotesque and the beautiful, each creature wants to have a family and to live on in the way he always has, even as the world around them changes.   This new work, full of hummable tunes, hijinks and lessons about friendships and responsibility, is sure to keep students enthralled and to leave a lasting impression.

We bring the performance to your school and all you need to provide is a tuned piano and the excited audience. K to 6 students will be able to experience the magic of opera and they can even participate as the orchestra using Orff instruments. Specially adapted for younger audiences and performed in English, this fully-staged and costumed opera lasts approximately 45 minutes and is followed by a question and answer period with the cast.   Only 30 performances will be offered between January 25 to February 12, 2010. To guarantee your spot and save money book now !    Until April 1, 2009, we will offer the special price of just $650, which is $50 less than the early bird booking price offered for the 2009 tour.

Norwood School – Principal: Heather Raymond

“The students found the learning experience of watching the opera to be stimulating and created much discussion and questions after seeing the performance. As educators, we know we have done our job when children are filled with questions of wonder. Your performance created just that kind of excitement, which charged the children to ask their teachers many questions to extend their learning about the workings of an opera. Thank you for creating this enthusiasm in learning.”

Sifton School – Principal: Mary Butlin

“The mouths agape, the eyes as big as saucers confirmed what I suspected: my students had never seen such passion for music, such dedication to the trade, such excitement in performance. It is indeed my duty to increase their exposure to such cultural experiences. I thank you for providing the mechanism to perform my duty. My Sifton stars rarely get the opportunity to experience the fine arts in life and your performance opened an entire world to them.”
